Types of meditation

Meditation is a practice that encompasses a wide range of techniques and approaches, each with its unique focus and benefits. While we have discussed the benefits of meditation in our previous article, we focus on the types of meditation in this one.

Here are some different forms of meditation:

Mindfulness Meditation: This form of meditation involves bringing one's attention to the present moment without judgment. It often involves focusing on the breath, bodily sensations, or the environment and observing thoughts and emotions as they arise and pass without judgement.

Loving-Kindness Meditation: Also known as Metta meditation, it involves cultivating feelings of love, compassion, and goodwill towards oneself and others. Practitioners typically repeat positive affirmations or visualise sending love and kindness to themselves, loved ones, neutral individuals, and even difficult people. It aims at removing negative feelings towards others and also towards yourself.

Guided Visualization: This form of meditation involves following verbal guidance or recorded instructions to visualise specific images or scenarios. It can help in relaxation, self-exploration, and manifesting desired outcomes.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Walking Meditation: Instead of sitting, walking meditation involves mindful walking, paying close attention to the sensations of each step, the movement of the body, and the surroundings. It can be practised indoors or outdoors, preferably in a quiet and peaceful environment.

Body Scan Meditation: This technique involves systematically scanning the body with one's attention, starting from the toes and gradually moving up to the head. The purpose is to develop an awareness of bodily sensations, release tension, and promote relaxation.

Transcendental Meditation (TM): TM is a technique where practitioners repeat a mantra silently, allowing the mind to settle into deep rest. It aims to transcend normal thinking processes and access a state of pure awareness.    

 Kundalini Meditation: Kundalini meditation combines focused breathing      techniques, repetitive movements, and chanting to activate and awaken the dormant spiritual energy believed to reside at the base of the spine (kundalini). It is aimed at achieving higher levels of consciousness.This is one of the most challenging and advanced practices of meditation.

Zen Meditation: Derived from the Buddhist tradition, Zen meditation, or Zazen, emphasises sitting in stillness and maintaining an alert presence. Practitioners often focus on their breath or engage in koan introspection, contemplating paradoxical questions or statements to transcend conceptual thinking.

Sound Meditation: Sound meditation focuses on specific sounds or vibrations to induce deep relaxation and heightened awareness. It can be practised using instruments like singing bowls, gongs, or recorded sounds.

Candle meditation: Candle meditation is a form of focused meditation where one sits in a dark room and stares at the flame of a candle. The candle becomes the object of concentration. This practice, trataka, is suitable for eyesight and building focus. Many people use scented candles to enhance their mood during this practice. Make sure to use soya, coconut wax and not paraffin wax candles.

Crystal Meditation: Crystal meditation involves using crystals or gemstones to enhance the meditative experience. Here's how you can incorporate crystals into your meditation practice. Choose a crystal that resonates with your intention or desired focus. For example, amethyst for calming energy, rose quartz for love and compassion, or clear quartz for clarity and amplification. Find a quiet spot and hold the crystal in your hand or place it where you can see it. Visualise its energy radiating and enveloping you, and meditate for as long as possible. Crystal meditation increases focus and builds a sense of calm and harmony.

Pranayama: It is an ancient practice which involves a set of breathing techniques that help in regulating your breath. By holding your breath, you can control the power of your mind. It is the most popular meditation and includes different practices like anulom vilom, kapalbhati, bhastrika pranayama, and bhramari pranayama.


Remember that the true essence of meditation lies in cultivating awareness, presence, and inner stillness. Feel free to modify these techniques to suit your preferences and adapt them to your practice. You can use prayer beads, candles, incense sticks, and singing bowls as accessories to aid you in your meditation practice. And let the journey of meditation begin!
